Ces journées d’études s’intègrent dans les "workshop series Research Training in Old Chinese (http://bicc.banksidesystems.net)" organisées par Dirk Meyer, de l’institut oriental de l’Université d’Oxford. Cette série s’intéresse à différentes aires disciplinaires de la Chine impériale et pré-impériale et du chinois ancien.

* During the last weekend of August (26-29.08.2010), Sinology Society Yuan is organizing the International Sinology Symposium. This symposium is being organized every year at a different tourist location in Slovenia. This year it will take place at the pearl of Slovenian Alps-Bohinj lake.
Each individual willing to present and share his or her research in the field of sinology is welcomed to send short abstracts to our e-mail (in English). The working language of the symposium is English, and the title of this year’s workshop is : Cultural identity of China and Taiwan
The participants of our symposium are therefore sinologists, students of sinology, researchers as well as experts from other fields. YUAN will reimburse the travel expenses to all the lecturers coming from abroad and will also cover other expenses for them during the symposium.
* Appel a contribution sur le thème "L’éclatement de la ville sur les campagnes" ? dans le cadre de la journée d’étude sur les recompositions du rapport urbain-rural dans les mobilités de loisir en Chine au début du XXIe siècle. Nouveaux lieux, nouvelles pratiques et représentations. Cette journée d’étude est organisée dans le cadre du Pôle Ville de l’Université Paris-8, en partenariat avec le CECMC. Elle aura lieu à l’Université Paris-8 Vincennes, à Saint-Denis, le lundi 6 décembre 2010 (9h30-18h). La proposition de contribution doit être envoyé au plus tard le 15 août 2010. * L’association européenne des études chinoises (EACS) relance le Young Scholar Award (prix du jeune chercheur). Between locations in East Asia where ethnic Chinese constitute a
predominant or significant proportion of the local population, there
have always been dense traffics of cultural products popular
literature, films, pop music and television programs - in various
Chinese languages. The most significant nodes in these corridors of
traffic are the PRC, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore, and the more
peripheral areas include particular cities in Asia-Pacific rim. The
production, distribution, circulation and consumption of the pop
cultural products constitute a loosely integrated cultural economy,
which may be discursively and substantively designated as Pop Culture
China. In contrast to cultural conservatives¹ efforts search for a
cultural centre for the global Chinese diaspora, the configuration of
Pop Culture China is substantively and symbolically without centre.
This is evident, for example, in the use of different Chinese
languages in the cultural products Mandarin, Cantonese,
Minnan/Taiwanese/Hokkien - and the different production centers for
different medium and genre of cultural products.
This international workshop is looking for papers that are will
contribute to the refinement of the idea of Pop Culture China and/or
provide substantive analysis of particular aspects of the network of
flows in any of the Chinese pop culture medium.
SUBMISSION OF PROPOSAL
Those wishing to present a paper at the workshop are invited to submit
a paper proposal which includes a title, a 500-word abstract, and a
short paragraph of personal self-description by 15 August 2009.

7th International Conference on the Chinese Economy Thirty years of reforms : What about Capitalism in China ?

The CERDI-IDREC organizes every two years an international conference on the Chinese economy, with the objective of strengthening scientific collaboration and contacts between research centres around the world. This year, the conference is organized in collaboration with the CCES, Fudan University (Shanghai, China).
As such, the conference will include academic researchers as well as practitioners from international organizations. The theme of the conference will focus on the characteristics of China’s capitalism after 30 years of reforms. The startling transformation that began 30 years ago with the accession of Deng Xiaoping has been one of the world’s great stories. China has moved from a state planned and state owned economy towards state regulation of a hybrid economic system with the existence of a private economic sphere that remains very close to the state system that spawned it. Besides its achievements and experience, mistakes have also been made and there are lessons to be learned from these.
All papers dealing with China’s capitalism are welcome. This year, the conference will focus more specifically on the following topics : economic policy, inequalities, productivity, “soft infrastructure” (immaterial conditions such as the rule of law, open financial institutions, civil society and entrepreneurial spirit), education and environment. Long run issues can be developed. A special attention should be paid to the role of history in the evolution of the Chinese economy.
HOW TO SUBMIT
Interested authors should submit either a draft or a detailed abstract of their paper by June 20, 2009, to : china.conference2009@cerdi.org. The abstract should include the objectives, the methodology as well as the expected results. Kindly send us the cover page together with your paper (see below).
The scientific committee, in collaboration with the local organizing committee, will select papers for the conference. A confirmation of accepted papers will be sent to the authors by July 15, 2009.
The final version of the papers should be submitted by October 1st, 2009.
As for the previous conferences the best papers will be published in the China Economic Review or in a book format.

Colloque international :
« Le roman en Asie et ses traductions »
11 et 12 décembre 2009
Alors que Horace Engdahl, secrétaire perpétuel de l’Académie suédoise, auquel revient chaque année la tâche d’annoncer le prix Nobel de littérature, a déclaré récemment : « Il y a de la littérature de qualité dans toutes les grandes cultures, mais on ne peut échapper au fait que l’Europe, toujours, est le centre du monde littéraire », on peut se demander si le roman en Asie, aussi bien ancien que contemporain, ne constitue pas un genre littéraire tout aussi important que le roman occidental.
Les communications pourront porter sur les thèmes suivants : Comment choisir les textes ? Pourquoi les choisir ? Comment les traduire ? Comment les présenter ? Peut-il exister une critique des traductions ? En fonction de quels critères ? La question des auteurs qui se traduisent eux-mêmes. La traduction des ?uvres à partir de versions déjà traduites, l’édition des textes, la réception des traductions… On n’exclura pas des communications portant sur les ?uvres elles-mêmes, reflets de leur époque, instruments de divertissement ou de recherche esthétique.

* WAGNet Graduate Workshop : Women and Gender in Contemporary Chinese Studies
21-23 January 2009 at the University of Bristol, UK
This is the fourth in a series of very successful WAGNet graduate workshops. Previous workshops were held in Leiden, Oxford and Prague.
The Bristol workshop is for PhD students who are at an advanced stage of their research and working on any aspect of ‘women and gender in contemporary Chinese studies’. Participants will be expected to present a paper that treats issues of ’women’ and ’gender’ as central and significant categories of analyses.
Students will get the opportunity to present their projects to other graduate students and more senior scholars working in the field of China-related women and gender studies. All too rarely do Ph.D. students have an opportunity for critical exposure of their thesis prior to submission and defence. The workshop is therefore designed to facilitate in-depth discussions and each presentation will be commented on by a senior academic discussant.
The workshop, accommodation and meals during the workshop are free. Some travel bursaries are also available.
Students wanting to participate should submit an outline of their project (750 words) including information on the state of their research, a curriculum vitae, and one letter of reference from someone who is familiar with their PhD (under separate cover). * "PROVISION OF PUBLIC SERVICES IN MODERN URBAN CHINA AND CHANGING MODES OF GOVERNANCE"
International workshop organized by the Centre for East Asian Studies,
University of Turku, Finland.
Abstracts are due by February 1, 2009 ; conference to be held August 12-14,
2009.
The workshop will address the long term development of different modes of
governance in urban China. By focussing on the provision of public services
? health services, education and social relief - the workshop aims at
enhancing our understanding of how various modes of governance have emerged
in urban China and how the relationship between state and society has
developed. Public services have long been considered a responsibility of the
state. Yet in China there is also a strong tradition of private actors to
provide public goods as part of philanthropic and charitable endeavours. Is
it possible to discern salient continuities in the modes of governance ? To
what extent have old practices generated new outcomes in the contemporary
China ? Do the current modes of governance represent a revival of pre-Mao
practices or should they be seen as based in the systems of the socialist
China ?
We call for submissions of papers from scholars and advanced graduate
students in history and social sciences working in the China field. The
number of accepted papers will be around 25.
We would like the presentations to cover the following topics, although
papers on other topics are also welcome :
1. Governance in the fields of health, education and social relief
2. Case studies or comparisons which highlight regional, local, sectoral,
temporal typicalities
3. Diffusion of influences through governance networks (e.g. foreign
influences)
4. Theoretical and methodological issues in governance research
5. The role and significance of Chinese charitable and volunteers ?

* "Terrains et Travaux" : appel à contribution sur "les Terrains de la Chine"
En appelant des contributions portant sur des terrains chinois, Terrains & Travaux entend non seulement rendre compte de cette conjoncture, mais aussi s’interroger sur ce qu’implique, pour les sciences sociales l’épreuve du terrain chinois. Qu’il s’agisse de terrains étudiés pour eux-mêmes ou aux fins d’allonger un questionnaire comparatif, les enquêtes chinoises portant sur l’immigration, la stratification sociale, les inégalités, le développement d’une société urbaine capitaliste, la ségrégation, la mobilité intergénérationnelle, la famille, la construction sociale de l’individualité, etc., contribuent-elles à redéfinir les catégories de description et d’analyse ? Quelles premières leçons peut-on tirer sur ce point d’une Chine que certains rêvent investie du titre de nouveau laboratoire des sciences sociales ? L’entrée de la Chine dans le paysage des sciences sociales vient-elle à point nommé lorsque celles-ci cherchent de nouvelles pistes ?

La journée d’étude des doctorants des centres Chine, Corée et Japon
L’équipe Chine, Corée, Japon, l’UMR 8173 de l’EHESS et du CNRS organise une journée d’étude afin de permettre aux doctorants et aux docteurs ayant soutenu leur thèse l’année précédente, de faire connaître leurs recherches sur la Chine, la Corée et le Japon dans les conditions d’un colloque scientifique.
Cette journée d’étude des doctorants aura lieu le lundi 26 janvier 2009 à l’EHESS.
Chaque intervenant disposera de 40 minutes composées de :

10 minutes de débat avec les auditeurs

* Sixth Conference of the European Association of Taiwan Studies
The European Association of Taiwan Studies (EATS) will hold its sixth annual conference on 16-18 April 2009. The conference is co-organized by the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) and Center of East Asian Studies, Autonoma University of Madrid, Madrid, Spain.
Venue : Madrid. The organizers particularly welcome abstracts on the following themes :
1. “Taiwanese Democracy : A Model for Mainland China and Hong Kong ?” in the field of Domestic Politics and Democracy
2. “Social Realism” in the field of Literature
3. “1949-2009 : 60 years of the ROC” in the field of History and Social Sciences
